2  Academics / Ms. Teebagy / ENG III MAY 2013 ESSAY TOPICS on: May 20, 2013, 01:37:30 PM
MAY 2013 ESSAY TOPICS.
Choose one of the following topics and complete a 5 paragraph essay.
Put your essay on EssayScorer (YOUR PICK-MAY 30, 2013) and print your essay to hand into me.
This essay will be due on May 30, 2013.

PROMPT 1:
The word "tradition" seems innocent enough; we associate it with holiday observations and customs practiced by our ancestors. But tradition, or at least the belief in it, is a trap. At every level, from the individual to the national, tradition is simply an excuse for doing things the way they have always been done, even if that way makes no sense or causes harm to others.

Assignment: Does tradition prevent people from doing things in new or more sensible ways?

Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

PROMPT 2:
People throw away what they could have by insisting on perfection, which they cannot have, and looking for it where they will never find it.
Adapted from Edith Schaeffer

Assignment: Can the desire for perfection be disastrous?

Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations

PROMPT 3:
Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but
cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves
off.
Adapted from Franklin D. Roosevelt

Assignment: Is cooperation ultimately more successful than competition?

Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

6  Academics / Ms. Teebagy / LEVELING PROCESS FOR 2013-2014 on: March 22, 2013, 08:38:44 AM
LEVELING PROCESS
The leveling process takes place each year in March for students in grades 9, 10, and 11.
Departments meet to discuss the optimum placement for students to achieve academic success the following year. Recommendations for placement are based upon student academic achievement in each subject area as demonstrated in the first semester average that includes first and second quarter grades and the semester exam grade.

The following criteria is used to remain in or change levels:

College Preparatory
Students must successfully complete all academic requirements in order to obtain a passing grade in the prerequisite course. Teacher approval for college preparatory electives may be required as stated in the individual course descriptions outlined in the Program of Studies booklet.

Accelerated
In order for a student to move from the college preparatory to the accelerated level in an academic discipline, the student must demonstrate high academic achievement and work ethic in first and second quarter grades as well as mastery of content in the subject area on the January semester exam.
A minimum semester average of 85 is required along with department approval. In order for an accelerated student to remain in the accelerated level, he/she must attain a semester average of 80 or above, demonstrate a mastery of the subject content on the semester exam, and have the approval of the current teacher.

Honors
In order for a student to move from the accelerated level to the honors level in an academic discipline, the student must demonstrate high academic achievement, a high degree of motivation, the ability to think critically, and the ability to master content material being taught at a fast pace.   Minimally, students should have a semester average of 90 in the accelerated course and department approval. In order for an honors level student to remain in honors, he/she must demonstrate all of the above, have a semester average of 85 or above and the approval of the current teacher.
